A lot of people aren't really sure where to start looking for interior decorating ideas। Interior decorating, and interior decorating ideas, is usually specific to a particular philosophy or aesthetic of design. Because of my background, my own philosophy is heavily influenced by the practice and art of Feng Shui, but don't let this deter you - feng shui is perfectly complementary to whatever other interior decorating ideas you may have collected. It simply adds a nice touch and guide to everything, especially interior decorating ideas!
The first of a few interior decorating ideas I'd like to offer is to balance everything. Don't overdo anything when you're decorating - if it looks just right, chances are it probably is. Make sure that you try different combinations of items, definitely, but once you find one that just works, keep it that way. The feng shui explanation for this is that every item, every piece of furniture or décor that you may use in your home gives of a particular ‘energy' of sorts, and this influences the other items in your home. It is the sum of these energies that influences your mood, and makes things feel ‘just right' or ‘a little bit off'. I have seen feng shui practitioners especially, go against this principle and it just doesn't work - hanging crystals all around the house, growing bamboo next to the front door, placing a fountain in the living room - it may be fine with feng shui, but it goes against everything we know about interior design and aesthetics. This is the most simple, yet most effective of interior decorating ideas.

The second of the interior decorating ideas that I'd like to talk about, is to go easy on themed rooms. Sure, it seems nice when everything looks the same - but do you really need a red or maroon everything in your bedroom? Does everything in your living room have to be a shade of brown? Sometimes having an odd item here and there can make a room feel more real and comfortable. In feng shui, we believe in balancing elements within a room, to allow ‘chi' to flow gracefully rather than concentrating a particular type of energy in a confined space. When you start interior decorating, think about how you'd like the room to look, and if there are any special mementos or objects that you'd like the room to feature. I assure you, it may seems like a good idea to match the everything in your living room - but you'll get bored of it very, very quickly. Interior decorating ideas are supposed to create a nice aesthetic, but it is often about keeping things almost perfect, not pristinely perfect.

A final and very simple interior decorating idea is that less is more. Now I mean this in two ways. Less is more in décor almost always - complicated displays, setups, combinations of wall features and colors will often confuse and annoy both yourself and guests in your home. In feng shui this is also true - it is often the small, discreet cures or objects that have the most auspicious properties. A pair of small red lion figurines can often have much more of an impact that a seven foot bamboo plant. The second aspect of less in more in terms of interior decorating ideas is that often decorating can involve removing items already in a room. In the organization and feng shui worlds, we call this ‘decluttering'. Clutter, are things that begin to pile up in a room without intention or much thought - magazines, collectables, CD and DVD cases and papers are all clutter than should be cleaned. You'll be surprised how much clutter you are able to accumulate over the years, and how much your interior decorating ideas and efforts will be helped by clearing some of it to make space for more suitable items.
